In order to limit crashes due to too much speed the organizers indicated a slide zone where racers had to engage a slide that reduced speed going into the first bend. At first racers were skeptical but everyone said they had a lot of fun.

There were a few minor crashes including Dan Pape’s rookie mistake of crashing off the push. Good news is it wasn’t all over for racers that lost their heat. Zombie round gave them much more racing opportunities.

The winner circle

Fast downhill skateboarding is one level of extreme, but racing against another changes it completely.

At lunch time only racers left were Mitsu SDHC vs Yuji Ebizuka and Kohey Inoue vs Noriyuki Tamura. Tamura is coming off of leg injury and he still made it to semi finals. Last in the zombie round is Amane Kishida vs Daisuke Suzuki.

During lunch break some riders honed and practiced some freeriding. Right after nice lunch time gathering and chilling, the racing started again. The Zombie Round was so close that the finish line personnel had to review the video (see above). Amane Kishida took it from Daisuke just barely. Noriyuki knocked out Kohey in the Semi and Mutsu TKO’d Yuji Ebizuka. The final was Mutsu vs Nori. It was close but in the end Nori was the Street Fighter Boss. They hugged after the race.

Everyone that raced got a gift from the sponsors to take home. When we asked Noriyuki why he didn’t take the Loaded Tesseracts as his choice of prizes, he said “naw I just wanted the trophy”. Spoken like a true Street Fighter Champ.

At the end of the day it wasn’t about winning or prizes, it was about the possibility of future events like this possibly spreading all over Japan. You see, racing is easy to follow & exciting both for racers and spectators. A new precedent was set today and everyone that came feels it is step in the right direction for creating awareness for downhill skateboarding here in Japan. Do you want to host a race?
